Bread

What insanity prompted me to start making challah at 4am? Maybe I sought to enrobe myself in the oven's warmth as the temperature in the house dipped, in spite of the heater's best efforts, below 60 degrees. Turning on the oven to bake bread and simultaneously warm myself up is a good plan, in theory anyway. However, I quickly realized that I had a major hurdle to overcome before I could actually turn on the oven — how do I get the dough to rise in the chill of my home?

Holiday Cleansing

Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's seem to be packed awfully close together. Before I even have time to finish the Thanksgiving leftovers, it's already time to start making holiday cookies and planning the Christmas dinner! Right now, I'm having a bit of a much-needed breather between Christmas and New Year's — a light vegetarian lunch to offset the abundance of fat and sugar consumed over the last couple of weeks.

Little Sweet Things

In a fit of holiday baking/cooking binge, I...
Made some marshmallows, cut them into flowers, stars, and hearts;
Folded cute origami boxes with A;
Packaged said marshmallows into boxes with minimal squishing;
Duly delivered to Christmas list recipients without any additional quality-control (read: tasting).

Does anyone else think this is odd?

POM Wonderful, the maker of the 100% pomegranate juice sold in the bubbly plastic bottles, has thrown their hat into the ring of packaged coffee drinks and energy drinks with the introduction of POMx iced coffees. The company enters into direct competition against the likes of Starbucks, and Red Bull, and claims superiority because... well, it's got POMx!

Fruitful is our Bounty

I am so grateful that we have a prolific persimmon tree. This year, I'm especially grateful because the neighborhood squirrels and birds didn't totally denude the tree of persimmons like the way they did last year. (Yes, I've actually seen the culprits at work!) We reaped a nice sizable harvest. I look forward to a few weeks of crunchy sweet persimmons! I like them raw but peeled and cored. How do you like to eat your persimmons?

What a kicker!

"Coffee is my shepherd; I shall not doze. It maketh me to wake in green pastures, It leadeth me beyond the sleeping masses. It restoreth my brain, It leadeth me in the paths of consciousness for it's name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of sleep, I will fear no artificial sweetener for thou art with me; Thy cream and thy sugar they comfort me. Thou prepareth a carafe before me in the presence of my zzz's, Thou anointest my day with sunlight; My cup runneth over. Surely richness and flavor shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of Cappucino forever... Let us sip... or whatever... 1.707.769.4495. Cheers!"

BKM 1.0

I never was a morning person. Mornings, bright and sunny, have just a little too much perkiness, structure, and expectations for the number of tasks to be accomplished in the new day. Give me the night instead. Deep, dark, and mysterious, and perhaps just a bit wild, my perceived boundaries for creativity are removed. The possibilities are boundless. This is when I think about my blog posts, get inspirations for my next culinary project, convince myself to sign up for a half-marathon, work on my Photoshop illustrations, and engage in experimental shenanigans with my co-conspirator.

Yummy! Don't you just love to cook and stay near the oven when it gets too cold? Baking is one of the things I love to do now it seems :)
